"Don't judge me because
I sin differently than you."
~ Deiter F. Uchtdorf (referring to a bumper sticker)
I sin differently than you."
~ Deiter F. Uchtdorf (referring to a bumper sticker)
While this advice was offered in an religious setting, I think the two quotes have broader appeal.
Let me rephrase them for (mostly) myself and my writer friends.
Writers... when it comes to
- hating those who are more successful than you,
- gossiping (whether true or not) about those who may have hurt you,
- ignoring people who you think beneath you,
- ridiculing those do not follow the "rules" like you do,
- holding grudges against agents/reviewers who may have wronged you,
- or wanting to cause social harm to anyone who doesn't worship you...
Also... when it comes to
- hating yourself for not meeting expectations,
- speaking negatively of your talents,
- ignoring your needs, individuality and contributions,
- ridiculing yourself for making mistakes,
- holding a grudge for failing during any part of the process,
- or wanting to cause harm to your self, books, platform or image because you feel overwhelmed and under appreciated...
And finally, don't judge me because I write differently than you.
More important, don't judge yourself because you write differently than Successful Author #425. There is room for all of us.
Don't worry, I know. . .

I definitely need to take my own advice. |
What quote(s) do you find helpful in life? In writing?
What a great post! Here's 3 of my favorites:
ReplyDelete"That which does not kill you makes you stronger." -Neitzsche
"There are no classes in life for beginners: right away you are always asked to deal with what is most difficult." -Rainer Maria Rilke
“When you come to the edge of all the light you have known, and are about to step out into darkness, Faith is knowing one of two things will happen; There will be something to stand on, or you will be taught to fly.” -Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Oh, that is a lovely post and a very appropriate reminder for both writing and life. Wow...I think I want to memorize some of those quotes Elaine posted! I don't memorize quotes...but I always want to. Well, I know the one by Neitzsche. :)
ReplyDeleteI loved those quotes!!! I also loved the one that went something like "a right will never become a wrong and a wrong will never become a right." What an amazing weekend, right?!
ReplyDeleteYea!
ReplyDeleteLOVED this talk!! True to form I spent the first couple minutes thinking "Oh - so and so could totally learn from this, she is such a gossip!" Oops =) Good thing I spent the rest of the time figuring out how it applied to me and how I needed to change!
